"Novak Djokovic opposes compulsory coronavirus vaccination
World No. 1 expresses his opposition in online chat with fellow Serbian athletes

With the governing bodies of tennis suspending all tournaments until July, World No.1 Novak Djokovic says he "wouldn't want to be forced by someone to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel."

Novak Djokovic faces a dilemma if it becomes compulsory for players to get vaccinated before they can begin competing once the tennis season resumes following the hiatus created by the coronavirus pandemic, the world number one said on Sunday.

"Personally I am opposed to vaccination and I wouldn't want to be forced by someone to take a vaccine in order to be able to travel," Djokovic said in a live facebook chat with several fellow Serbian athletes.

"But if it becomes compulsory, what will happen? I will have to make a decision. I have my own thoughts about the matter and whether those thoughts will change at some point, I don't know.

"Hypothetically, if the season was to resume in July, August or September, though unlikely, I understand that a vaccine will become a requirement straight after we are out of strict quarantine and there is no vaccine yet."

Last month, former world number one Amelie Mauresmo said the rest of the 2020 tennis season might be wiped out, saying that action should not resume before players can get vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

"International circuit = players of all nationalities plus management, spectators and people from the 4 corners of the world who bring these events to life. No vaccine = no tennis," the two-time grand slam winner said in a widely shared tweet.

Medical experts have said that vaccines against the respiratory virus would not be ready until next year, raising doubts whether any further tennis tournaments can be contested this year.

This year's Wimbledon championships have been canceled for the first time since World War II while the French Open, originally due to be held from May 24-June 7, was rescheduled for Sept. 20 - Oct. 4, shortly after the end of the U.S. Open.

Djokovic made a flying start to the 2020 season, winning the Australian Open in January for his 17th grand slam title and stretched his winning run to 18 matches before the pandemic brought sports events across the world to a halt.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the Euro 2020 soccer championship were among the events postponed until next year as the pandemic has caused 165,000 deaths worldwide.

So far the governing bodies of tennis have suspended all tournaments until July 13. In addition, the women's Rogers Cup in Montreal, which had been due to be held in August, will also not take place this year.

"Roger Federer's call for merger of men's, women's pro tours gains wide support among tennis stars

Tennis Canada says move could create myriad opportunities to grow sport

Roger Federer made a plea for women's tennis equality on Wednesday, calling for the merger of the two gender-specific governing bodies that oversee the sport's professional tours.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion, who is recovering from knee surgery while sports around the world have been shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic, expressed his opinion in a string of posts on Twitter.

<section id="inread-wrapper-id-10171488" style="font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"></section>"Am I the only one thinking that now is the time for men's and women's tennis to be united and come together as one?" Federer wrote, sparking a flurry of responses from fans and fellow players.

The professional era in tennis started in 1968, and the ATP was founded in 1972 and has run the men's game since. The WTA was founded in 1973, uniting the women's professional game into one tour.

The idea proposed by Federer, and others before him, would be to combine the two into a single body that deals with both men and women.

The social media posts were met with plenty of enthusiastic replies, including from Rafael Nadal and some of the world's top female players.

"As you know per our discussions," Nadal, a winner of 19 Grand Slams, wrote to Federer, "I completely agree that it would be great to get out of this world crisis with the union of men's and women's tennis in one only organisation."

'One voice … has long been by vision for tennis'

Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza, both recent Wimbledon champions, also gave the thumbs-up to Federer's idea.
So did Billie Jean King, the American great who founded the WTA and tried unsuccessfully to unite the men's and women's tours that decade.

"I agree, and have been saying so since the early 1970s. One voice, women and men together, has long been my vision for tennis," King tweeted in reply to Federer. "The WTA on its own was always Plan B. I'm glad we are on the same page. Let's make it happen."

"Bianca Andreescu will defend U.S. Open title, Rafael Nadal out due to pandemic

2019 men's champion concerned about increasing cases of COVID-19

...Nadal explained his decision in a series of tweets sent in Spanish and English on Tuesday.

<section id="inread-wrapper-id-26274651" style="font-size: 16px;"></section>"The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don't have control of it," Nadal wrote.

Nadal, 34, of Spain called sitting out the tournament scheduled to begin Aug. 31 in New York "a decision I never wanted to take," but added that he would "rather not travel."

"We know that the reduced tennis calendar is barbaric this year after four months stopped with no play; I understand and thank (everyone) for the efforts they are putting in to make it happen."

The decision puts on hold Nadal's bid to equal Roger Federer's men's record for Grand Slam titles.
